Merdeka Awards: Fire in the belly drove fight against injustice

Datuk P.G. Lim could have just sat back and enjoyed a gilded life, but she chose instead to champion causes and stand up for what is right.

Cambridge-schooled Lim went from being one of the nation's pioneer women lawyers to one of the most prominent, taking up cases no one dared to.

Raslan Loong’s consultant awarded Merdeka Award

The Merdeka Award is open to all living Malaysian citizens (individuals or organizations) and non-citizens for outstanding contribution to the people of Malaysia. PG Lim was selected because of her many accomplishments which included being a diplomat, noted lawyer, union champion and director of the KL Regional Centre for Arbitration.

National Mergers & Acquisitions Award 2009: M&A Transaction Support Firm of the Year - Legal & Regulatory

Raslan Loong was again selected as one of the finalists for this year's M&A Legal Firm award by the Malaysian Mergers and Acquisitions Association. This is the third year running that Raslan Loong’s work in mergers and acquisitions has been recognised.

The award for the M&A Transaction Support Firm of the Year- Legal and Regulatory is in recognition of leading law firms that have:

• dedicated M&A team and capabilities

• develops new processes or procedures to effectively manage client needs

• develop competitive edge

• ability to streamline deal process

• imaginative approach to legal issues

• thinking outside of box

• high level of client satisfaction

• respected by peers (won awards)

The Malaysian Mergers and Acquisitions Association noted Raslan Loong’s involvement in the strategic RM1.34 billion acquisition of a 20.2% stake in EON Bank by Primus Pacific Partners.

Raslan Loong was also involved in the RM1.54 billion merger of Ming Pao Enterprise Corporation Limited, Sin Chew Media Corporation Berhad and Nanyang Press Holdings Berhad which won the coveted Deal of the Year Award and also the Strategic/Industrial Deal, Cross Border Deal and Innovative Deal of the Year Awards.

CSR Book Launch

International Alliance of Law Firms: Asia Pacific Regional Meeting

The International Alliance of Law Firms (Alliance) is an international network of leading commercial law firms with 56 member firms in 40 countries. Raslan Loong hosted the 2008 Asia Pacific Regional Meeting from 20 to 22 November. The Regional meeting was attended by representatives from throughout the Asia Pacific Region including New Zealand, Japan, India, Canada, Great Britain and various states from Australia.

Delegates to the meeting met with the Heads of Mission and trade attaches from the member countries and also clients and contacts of the members at a welcoming cocktail reception hosted by Raslan Loong.

Darryl Mann, the President of the Alliance who attended the Regional Meeting said “the experience of my firm, Torkin Manes Cohen Arbus LLP, Canada, in working with many of the members has been immensely beneficial, positive and rewarding. International Franchising and Trade Exhibition – Milan, Italy

Raslan Loong participated in the 23^rd International Franchising and Trade Exhibition held in Milan, Italy from 17 October 2008 to 20 October 2008.  Raslan Loong set up a booth in the Malaysian Pavillion at the the Fieramilano Rho Trade Fair Complex to identify exhibitors who were planning to expand their operations to Malaysia, and to advise them on the legal framework in Malaysia. Franchise advisory work forms a major practice area within the Intellectual Property and Technology Department of the firm as the franchising sector enjoys robust growth throughout the world. In Italy, there are some 46,000 franchisees generating a turnover of €21bn and is expected to grow by over 7% in 2008.
